Introduction to the case studies, case selection and methodology.

Work Package 7 in the AURES project focuses on future implementation possibilities of auctions for renewable energy support in Europe. The work is based on specific case studies for selected member states in the European Union which should have a high replication potential.

In Task 7.1, five specific auction implementation cases are identified. The main objective of the cases is to assist interested countries in the auction implementation process and to provide an information source with examples which may serve as an input for future design approaches.

This report deals with the planned implementation of auctions for renewable energy support in five case studies. The report focuses on the implementation process and provides the necessary background information. Furthermore the planned auction designs are described and discussed both from a policy maker’s and an investor’s point of view. Finally, main strengths and weaknesses are identified and the schemes are discussed according to several success criteria. The proposed designs are related to the findings from AURES work packages 2, 3 and 4, which included the identification of success criteria, of appropriate auction formats and suitable design elements for RES auctions, as well as the analysis of past auction implementations.
